Lawrence Livermore researchers are furthering our understanding of phenomena in space and from space.
The Space Science Institute fosters multidisciplinary teams that address key questions in astrophysics and planetary science, such as: how does the universe work, how did our solar system form, and are we alone?
To answer these questions, our researchers analyze, model, and interpret data obtained by existing observatories and develop technology and instrumentation for future observatories. Researchers perform laboratory experiments to analyze samples of extraterrestrial material and create conditions that mimic those in space.
Our pursuits at LLNL are enabled by unique experimental capabilities and research expertise in optics, plasma physics, nuclear science, high-performance computing, and data science. Our collaborations with other research institutions, including NASA centers and universities, expand the scope and impact of our work.
